David Jack is a football fan living in Sydney, Australia. David has played football at both a professional and amateur level for over 40 years, including a period with Manchester United. His father, also David Jack, was a respected football writer, both in the U.K. and Australia. Apart from his interest in football, David has been active in the finance industry for many years, plays guitar and is a big fan of 1960’s music

* David Bone Nightingale Jack, David’s grandfather, was an English professional footballer who played for Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers and England and scored the first goal in an F.A. Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in 1923

    Lou Massie here, you know the girl that slept in David Bowie’s bed. Lou O sent me this link and I would like you to know how much I loved reading such an insightful and superbly written tale of seasonal sport.
    Sign me up, I’m looking forward to your thoughts on what I suspect will be around life’s happiest offerings, music, sport, family and dreams.

    1. Hi Lou, it’s lovely to hear from you. The writing is just a bit of fun but now that my day job appears to have been exterminated by that smug Commissioner Kenneth Hayne at the Royal Commission, I might have to charge people to read my articles – Ha ha ! I don’t think you need to sign up, just Google djcjack.com occasionally. Are you a Plymouth Argyle fan? My great grandfather Bob Jack’s ashes are scattered over the pitch at Plymouth. He is still their longest servicing manager (30 odd years). I reckon there’s a story somewhere in David Bowie’s bed 😊. I think Lou is warming to Song Club again so I will probably see you soon David x

  2. David – Came across an article in 2019 describing the events leading to your trial at Manchester United. I managed to work out who you were. I am a good friend of your 1st cousin once removed Bob Jack of Birkdale. Your great grandfather, Bob Jack, played for Glossop as well as the other teams you mention. I have a newspaper cutting of a photograph and article of his playing in 1902. Interestingly they refer to him as Mr Bob Jack. He was also the English Bowls Singles Champion in 1926 and captained the England team – despite being Scots. Your cousin, Bob, was Treasurer of the English Bowling Association for many years and served as a President for a year. I think he was also Treasurer of the British Isles Bowls Association for some time. He was awarded an MBE. I note that you came back to
    Manchester in 1970. When did you return to Australia? Regards Gordon Niven

    1. Hi Gordon, thank you for your response and the information. I know that there was a strong lawn bowls connection in the family and I think that both Donald and Rollo Jack excelled at lawn bowls. Our family came out to Australia in March 1967 and at the age of 17, I returned to Manchester for my trial with United in November 1970. I was there until late February 1971 and they offered to keep me on for a further 12 months but I was homesick and had matriculated to go to university in Sydney so returned home. I quit university six months later ! I did have a semi professional football career in Australia, in fact at the age of 67 am still playing – well I pull on the boots every Saturday during our season. I haven’t been back to the UK since 1971 and have lost touch with family members but it’s always interesting to hear from those who have known family members. With the ease of accessibility these days, it would be nice to get in touch with Bob and do you live in the Southport / Birkdale area ? My father, David Ronald Jack was only 64 when he died and now I think of all the questions I would like to have asked him about his father and the family as well as all the great footballers, that he had watched over the years. I watched the series “The English Game” last year and was thinking that great grandfather Bob, followed a similar path only around 10 years later, to that of the two Scottish players who featured, when Bob came down from Alloa and signed for Preston North End. Thank you again for your commetns and any other interesting news on the Jacks would be most welcome.
